[modern] good car day/headlight question

first: having nothing constructive to do today, i played with my volvo and
jag. for $95 i changed the oil and filter, air filter, and flushed
radiators. for the first time i also quick drained the jag transmission. i
took out about 2.5 quarts and put 3 back in. i tried the volvo but couldn’t
get the drain line nut to budge, even with penetrant. so that’s another day.
(by my mechanic’s rates i’m already ahead by $215, after parts.)

i couldn’t find easily identifiable orange coolaid antifreeze at my local el
cheapo stores so i paid a few bucks more to buy “gearhead” brand at a legit
parts place my mechanic uses. warning: the purolator “jag” air filter is
about half an inch or more less in depth than a wix or jag air filter so
that one will get replaced in about six months.

now, the headlight question: my 89’s quads were replaced with rectangular
bricks before purchase. in looking at lighting messages and haynes i’m
confused. there is a large nearly flat rubber seal on the back through which
wires enter the housing, but i can’t tell from an external look what bulb
(apparently singular) it takes, and whether it’s straight, or one of these
90-degree bend bulbs i see in haynes. i keep seeing reference to low and
high beams, but this appears to use a single bulb. Which one 9004, 9005,
900? … the only other guidance i see is part numbers on the plastic frame:
488513 on the left, 488514 on the right, made in belgium by Valxxx?

anyone have any guidance? to be honest, i just thought of this tonight and
haven’t tried to peel back the rubber cover and see any more, in part
because there’s next to no room. on the left i’ll probably have to take the
air filter housing off to get enough room and on the right pull the relay
box off to get room for my hand in there.

thanks.

Eliot,

9004 is a dual filament combined high/low beam. It is a fairly crappy bulb.
I had these in my 89 and 92 Mustangs. It was the first DOT bulb that was
released that wasn’t the entire headlamp.

The 9005 is a single filament, usually high beam on a four headlight system
The 9006 is also a single filament, and is usually the low beam.

Hope this helps.
