[modern] heater valve..normally open? normally closed?

Good Day eh!

Well, its time to replace the heater valve. Removed mine and found
absolutely no internals…that must be why it doesn’t stop the flow !!
(brilliance is one of my strong suits)

Anyways, reading the archives, i am lead to believe that the valve is
normally open…and that a vacuum is required to close the valve. Down I
go top my friendly neighbourhood auto parts guy to find a non-Jag
replacement. In HIS book, however, (two seperate manuals actually) the
Jaguar heater valve is listed as a “vacuum to open” style valve (little
picture in book shows my valve)

So, question is…:

Is the valve “vaccuum to close ie…normally open” or is it “vacuum to
open…normally closed”??? The archives disagree with the manuals.

Oh, my car is the 1988 Sovereign, 3.6 litre…and…if it makes a
difference…the seats have a tear in the piping…(not sure if that
reflects on the proper valve choice or not) :slight_smile:

(On a side note, it seems there is a very popular vlave used by GM for
the buicks and caddys which seems to be the right size etc as a
replacement for the jag valve…and its about $30 cdn…compared to
$107 cdn for the real McCoy…)

Normally open.
Since it is a British car the valve would be open if vacuum to it was lost
so at the very least you could get heat on a cold day.

The info I have says the valve is normally open, and application
of vacuum closes it and also opens the center vent flaps.
This is during max cooling mode…
Default no vacuum is open, and the defrost vents open as
well, so if you lose vacuum, you get heat and defrost
for safety…

I believe it’s normally open - this is fail safe ( can always get heat for
demist etc ), and also some models didn’t have the valve but relied on the
blend flaps to perform the temperature control.
