David, your symptoms sound soooo familiar. When I burnt (broke) a valve
the car would barely idle, yet I drove home 800 kms (slower than usual though).
Missing a cylinder really messes up the balance of the engine. I thought it might
leap right out from under the hood!
I think a compression test is the only way you can be sure if the head comes off or not.
Its not an easy job, but more satisfying than electrical quirks, squeaks, maintenance etc.
Better bragging rights in the pub too.
