[modern] Power Brake Loss

I bought a 95 XJ6 in mid-November. I normally garage
it, but last night I left it out. It got down to about
freezing. This morning as I backed it out of the drive
it appeared to have no vacuum-assist on the brakes.

Alarming, to say the least.

What could cause this? Has anyone else had experience
with this?

Hi Malcolm

When was the brake system last flushed? Had it been through a lot of
moisture just before sitting over night? I’m wondering if the calipers were
wet and froze…

I’m having the same problem with my '95 XJ6. I brought the car to VT
last February and discovered no brake boost much the same way as Malcolm did.
When I took the car to the dealer in March, they found moisture in a check-valve
in the booster circuit and thought that the problem was fixed. As luck would
have it,
the weather stayed warm until recently, so there was no way to tell.
Unfortunately,
the recent cold snap caused the problem to resurface, so I’m off to have it
looked
at again. Since this was a warranty problem that was not resolved, the dealer
told
me that it would be covered, even though the car just came off warranty. I will
report back once the problem is resolved.

Kevin,

I don’t know when, or if, it was flushed. This has
occurred momentarily on cold but not freezing nights
before, but for such a short instance that I wasn’t
able to tell if it was me or the car. This morning it
went on mildly and intermittently for about 3 minutes,
but the car’s never been this cold before. After
warming up it was fine. I’m pretty sure the problem
was in the boost circuit somewhere.
