“Alistair Roberts” wote

However the Series III felt heavy to drive and it had a lot more
body roll than the XJ40. It was certainly soft and rode bautifully, but
it felt less responsive as well. The old 4.2 XK motor doesn’t compare
with the AJ6 IMHO.

Dear XJ40 Listers:

Teh xj6 list people would definately not like to hear that, butthe reality
is that the XJ40 was in every way a better car. I have a video, I think it
is called the “3.8 liter Mk2” or something like that. Anyway, at the end is
a mid 80’s Jaguar marketing splash on the new XJ40. Its dated, but
informative.

The XJ40 has less noise, vibration, better stiffness and ride, and a better
engine than the 1940’s designed XK, legend that it was. A bit of
interesting trivia…the last car that Sir William Lyons had input to was
the XJ40 and he said (paraphrase from one of my Jag books) ‘it is the best
proportioned Jaguar ever designed’. So all those ‘boxy XJ40’ comments have
to be throrwn out, if not for Sir Williams sake…but we already knoew
that, right?
