[modern] Revised worry: Overheating/low oil pressure

Brett and all,
A follow up on my request for help and your kind reply: I searched the
archives until the wee hours and have switched my worry (I’m a bad one for
that) to the overheating. I running 20/50w that was changed within 1500mi and
as the oil pressure seems to vary from a worst case low of +/- 2 bars at
idle, to a 4-5 bars at speed, my concern is greater for the hot coolant temp
rising at idle (in just a few minutes), quickly going past the 3/4 mark. It
only activated the red warning light that one time, but
once was too much. And rose past 3/4 on my test run while at idle for only a
short time.
The A/C seemed to be running hotter in the day prior. Cooling only when the
cat was in motion. And I imagined the A/C adds to the rapid rise of the temp
gauge at both idle and at speed.
As you had said in your last post, the air flow cooled the engine at speed
but it wasn’t sufficiently cooled at lower speeds or idle. (worry, worry)
so…should the fan be running as the primary source of relief or might it be
a thermostat? Perhaps the radiators stopped up… Or, (worry)…worse yet, a
problem relative to the water pump itself.
Any and all help with a priority diagnosis is appreciated. My fears of any
further overheating, even for a moment, would have me scoot to the shop armed
with some helpful direction.

If it makes you feel any better, overheating is a rare condition for an
XJ6. It is most likely a relay or a poor electrical connection
somewhere, relatively easy to pin point and straight forward to fix.

From about 92 onwards the vast majority of niggles in these cars had
been ironed out, and with the exception of a slight weakness when it
comes to differential bearings the driveline is strong and long lived,
when given just routine care and attention.

I’ve had my car for almost 4 years and it has been the best car I’ve
ever had by a significant margin. At 7 years old it still looks
magnificent and is a joy to drive!

Fingers crossed
