[modern] Semi- or fully- synthetic?

I had the 60,000 mile service carried out last week by a Jaguar specialist
garage, who are not franchised Jaguar dealers. They told me that Jaguar
specify that only semi-synthetic should be used in the XJR. They used Comma
20W50 Semi-synthetic. Is this correct, or is the garage cutting costs?

The main Jaguar dealer near where I work is TWR Jaguar in Coventry, UK. They
say they use Mobil 1 0W40. Being the main dealer in Coventry, and only 2
Miles from Jaguars home at Browns lane, I would have thought if any one
knows, they would. However, are they just being trendy, and is image the
only reason they are using Mobil 1.

I most concede that my engine is quieter and feels better than before. It
previously had Shell Ultra 10W30 Fully synthetic. I am sure that Mobil 1
does very well under scrutiny in a lab, but is it really the best for all
engines, and most importantly for our engines?

Perhaps my writings will be slightly OT, but this topic reminds me a long discussion I’ve had on an italian NG.
We were talking about oils for bike use and the need of those “special formula” oils intended for bikes only. Well, ALL synthetic oils are made starting from 2 or 3 patended bases; it means that many manufacturers pay royalties to patents’ owners.
And it means that almost all oils are basically the same…

Most of cars and bikes manufacturers reccomandations are just marketing agreements.

IMHO, a good oil (SAE quality index FG or better) of the right grade (10W40, 10W50 and so on depending on environmental parameters) will do a good job.

Ooopss… It’s early in the morning :))
Should be API SG or better (SJ).

Sorry.

THe best scam in motors oils is CHEVRON DELO - it has the best additive
package for a reasonable price - I heard a pitch by Chevron Engineering &
was quite impressed - the only problem being you can’t get it in 5-30 grades
for modern engines … But for Jags, its ideal
