Hello, can the throttle body on a 3.6 be cleaned when
its on the car?, and how/why does the throttle gap

John,
You can clean the throttle on the car, but its a pain to do a good
job.
On the newer cars with the EGR system, its best to remove it so you
can get at the port behind the throttle.
Only spray solvents (sensor safe) on a rag and wipe the throttle,
don’t spray anything in the throttle, or all the goo will run into
the throttle sensor.

The throttle may change a small amount as the stop wears, but
mostly, its someone trying to adjust the idle speed at the throttle.

You should never have to adjust the throttle or the throttle sensor
if its not disturbed.
You can gap the throttle a little wider than the .05 mm (.002 inch)
but not lots more, or the idle gets out of range.
The TPS has to read the correct idle signal with the gap set.
You can set it a little wider as long as the idle signal is in range.
I don’t think you could go .5 mm…

John,
The throttle body is really not difficult to remove and is much easier to
clean as most of the grunge is behind the throttle plate. Haynes and The
archives detail the process well and if you run into a snag there is always
help available on the list.
