[modern] To idle, or not to idle

Dear List,
As I arrived at work this morning in my 90 XJ6 4.0 - no cruise control - I
was about to switch off the engine when the idle speed stated ‘hunting’ [
servo speak ] up to around 1500 RPM and back as if I had become a boy
racer, a vrooomer or just simply in love with the sound of the gorgeous
AJ6. Only the last will be admitted to… (:-))
I’ve had a browse through the archives [ bliss, oh joy! ] but they seem to
refer mainly to post-throttle body cleanouts and leaky pipes, neither of
which is applicable. I will arm myself with a fire hose full of WD40 and
attack connectors as per Brett and start the sleuthing process as a matter
of urgency. As always any Quick Fix advice is appreciated and I’ll keep you
posted on the results.
Maybeee, just maybeee, my throttle foot has a mind of its own…
Naaaah…
But who would blame it?
Cheers,
James… and his dithery AJ6…

James,
I would check for vacuum leaks…
egr system(pipe can break by egr valve)
evap system(port under throttle, and hoses in air dam)
other vacuum lines

Then, clean throttle, check tps signal voltage and set the base idle
speed.

The idle hunts when the system cant adjust the air to get the idle
in range…sure sounds like a vacuum leak.

Brett,
So does this mean that if you have a perfectly steady idle you have
zero Vacuum leaks?

Peter.

Peter,
Well, if the idle is very steady, it means you don’t have a BIG vacuum
leak.
The iscv can adjust the idle a bit in both directions, but if it gets
to far out in the high speed direction, the idle will hunt.
