[modern] Transmission mount installed

I finally had the chance to put my trasmission mount together in the right
order, so I can now drive the car again. I did threaten to take pictures
of the right way, and the haynes way, of putting it together - but I found
Alan Baker already had exactly these picture on his web site,

http://www.mph150.freeserve.co.uk/gearbox.htm

Unfortunately, I don’t notice any dramatic change from having a completely
disintegrated ring. My frequent ‘thunk’ as the gearbox changes down into
first when slowing remains.

I did notice that I can quite easily move the prop shaft up and down at
the centre bearing. All the movement seems to be in the rubber. How much
play is normal there? Is it worth disturbing the prop shaft to fix it, or
am I likely to only introduce the much recounted balance problems and make
things worse?

Ian,
The trans is supposed to bounce up and down easy, but the
center bearing is supposed to move only a little bit, like
1/2 inch max if you really push and pull on it.

Clunk can come from various places…

The trans mount and travel limiter,
The splines in the driveshaft and axles/hub,
The differential mounting bushings,
The transmission (harsh shifting),
The differential (play between ring and pinion gears),
Bad U joints,
Center bearing rubber.

The center bearing rubber being torn should give you vibrations,
mostly around 32 mph.

My car has a slight clunk from the transmission shifting a bit
harsh at times.
