[modern] Transmission Oil Leaking

Hi everyone,

I noticed that my steering rack started leaking slightly so I’ve been
keeping an eye on it. I knew I will soon have to replace it.

The other night after I got off the highway to a stoplight I noticed
some smoke coming from under the car. I got really worried. It turned
out that ATF oil leaked and splashed all over the mufflers causing the
smoke. I checked the steering oil reservoir and there was little left.

That’s not the end of the story. This morning I refilled the steering
reservoir and took out for a short drive, came back and checked stuff
under the hood. I was surprised to find that there was nothing on the
transmission dipstick. I’m afraid that the ATF I noticed was coming
from the transmission. Is it common that the transmission leaks oil?
If this is the case, what’s the worst scenario it could be? I did
notice some oil dripping from the transmission.

Thanks,
Quang

Quang,
On my car, if you just remove the trans dip stick, its typically
dry, as air builds up in the tube and no trans fluid shows on
the dip stick till you remove it, then put it back in and remove it
again.

The trans should not leak, although the pipes to the cooler may leak.

Best to fix the leak you know you have, then clean up everything
and check for leaks again.

bad to run low on power steering fluid, as the pump may run dry and be
ruined…
