[modern] Vaccum gauge

I decided, for no other reason then I have yet to do so, check my engine with
my vacuum gauge. I used a “T” and connected the gauge in line with the fuel
regulator vacuum. At 750 RPM I had a steady 20 inches. As per the Haynes
manual I flicked the throttle, the gauge dropped to (probably 0) and then up
to @ 25. This seems to be consistent with a good reading according to the
Haynes manual. Is this a good reading?

John,
Yes, that is a good reading.
You have to do the test with a warm/hot engine.

Most gauges come with diagnostic info, and I think its in the
haynes manual also.
Tells how to check for a plugged exhaust, vacuum leaks,
sticking valves, etc…

I do 20 inches or a little over with 126,000 miles
on the engine, at about 200 ft above sea level.

My son’s XJ40 had an annoying problem of the right front side/turn signal
light coming on sporadically for no reason.

If you thumped the bumper it went out, then came back on with the next
vibration…

Over time it was draining the battery.

Finally traced it to the bulb relay module, one of the return springs was
missing from one of the relays causing the circuit to “make” when jolted.

The question is, where can one get one of these tiny springs without buying
the whole bulb module?

Will,
if you have a Spring to take measurements it’s easy, I always use
Lee
Springs,http://www.leespring.com/catalystviewer/Applications/catalog/leespring/
they have a web site and you can order online…they sell every kind of
smaller spring you can imagine…
If you haven’t got a spring you could always kinda judge what size you
need…
Hope this helps…

I’ve not been inside a bulb fail module so am not familiar with the springs
you refer to. Can you give an approximate size?

In such or similar circumstances, when I need a small spring, I always use
one from an old retractable ball point pen. They are easy enough to modify.

Hi!

I am pretty sure that on my '94 there are some of the relays in these
modules that are not used, are there on yours? If so you could swap a spring
over.
