[modern] XJ40 losing electrical power

I have an '89 XJ40 that has suddenly picked up the habit of sporadically
losing all power. I was driving my car when it suddenly lost all power for a
brief moment, the power seatbelts slid forward and everything. Although the
engine doesn’t receive power when this happens it doesn’t always stall. When
the car loses electrical power it only happens for a second then comes back
to life, but this some times repeats over and over until the car stalls. I
have no idea what’s triggering these power losses. Some times the car wont
even start then miraculously start perfectly a few moments later. I tested
my batter, which is only a year old, and it has no problems with it. If
anyone has experienced a problem like this or has any information as to what
it might be please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

That’s a really nasty habit Tom.

Do you have any special anti-theft wiring in the car, such as an ignition
kill? If so I would suspect that first.

Otherwise, I would replace the ignition relay. It should be below the glove
compartment (LH drive car) behind the knee panel.

If that doesn’t do it, it could be the ignition switch.

Tom,
I am going something through similar to your challenge and am waiting for a
CPS from Coventry West.It should get here today. There is a thread about this
during the last three days or so.

The symptoms don’t match a bad CPS Peter. You would not lose electrical
power from a bad CPS.

Tom,
I would suspect the key switch.
You don’t have a large pile of keys hanging from it, do you?

There are also various relays involved, but I think there are different
circuits for the engine management, and lights and so on…

I don’t know what the impact/roll over switch kills when it goes off,
the entire electrical system, or just the fuel pump and engine management
system…

Maybe jiggle the keys next time the car quits…

Tom,

In addition to the other sage advice you have already gotten on this
subject, you might want to check your battery ground. It would give you the
same symptoms. The engine would continue to run off the alternator but
everything else comes through the battery. Just a quick thought.

If the battery ground was bad would the engine eventually cut out even
though it was running off the alternator? When the power cuts out in my car
the engine keeps running for a while but eventually will cut out. I did
clean the battery terminals when I had the battery tested and the problem
hasn’t occurred since then. Maybe a bad ground could have been the problem.
