[modern] XJ40 Strange Noise

Hi everyone and HELP!

My cat has recently developed a strange noise from underneath, which I am
having trouble tracking down. There is no noise at idle, it is only whilst
moving. Generally, it is apparent during acceleration, and in the last day
or so, it is apparent at constant speeds as well. The noise is a general
growly type noise as if something were touching the engine or exhaust, but
initial indications show that nothing is out of place.

We have checked each wheel, and it does not appear to be a wheel bearing,
and no obvious noise from the brakes. The exhaust mounts look in good
condition. However, the noise is not constant, and does vary with speed to
any degree of certainty. In fact, sometimes on acceleration it is not there,
but the next time it is.

Having just fixed all the other problems, it it the last thing to sort out.
Can anyone suggest anywhere else to look?
Any help would be most appreciated.

Richard,
Maybe the driveshaft center bearing?
Could be the rubber is bone, and the driveshaft is contacting
the body.

The transmission mount is also suspect.

Also check that the exhaust has not fallen off the last hanger
under the rear bumper.

Richard, I had a similar noise when I owned my 88 XJ6, it was the
transmission mount it is made of a foam type substance which disintegrates
with age, but it could also be something else. Part # MHG-7566AA

Hi Brett & Glenn

Thanks for the prompt response.
My research on the website was leading me to the transmount, and I found a
post from Brett in 1997 which describes my symptoms exactly. I am off to the
Jag Independant on Weds so I will add a mount to the list. At 132K I am sure
it is due for replacement even if it is not the cause. And if it isn’t the
cause, then I have only the drive shaft centre bearing that it could
be…

Thanks.

Richard

Wheel bearings don’t have to be loose to be noisy. Racers on the bearings
can get slightly worn around the edges. If you adjust them and tighten them
up, it will remove all the play (you should adjust wheel bearings on every
service anyway), but they will still be noisy because of the slight
roughness around the edges. Jack the car up and try turning each wheel , and
look for noise.

Last time I have seen such a problem, it was coming from the diff. Is your
diff leaking?

Cheers.
