Mounting Mk9 rear brakes

I am trying to set up Mk9 rear brakes on my 140 axle. This hand brake uses the bell crank type “compensator” mounted on the back of the differential. It doesn’t look like I can get any reasonable straight line pull of the cables unless I mount the calipers to the rear of the axle. The D shape bolt pattern on the axle itself and the adapter limits where and how I locate them. So far I have always seen the calipers mounted inboard of the axles. What am I doing wrong here? I could use any illustrations or photos of how the cables, bell crank, or calipers are mounted but can’t find anything in books.
