My 95 XJS 4.0 doesn’t start

My 95 XJS will not start. Installed a new battery but this didn’t help …When I turn the key nothing happens. The battery indicator goes to discharge… Is this a starter problem?

Do you hear a clicking noise from the engine bay? Is there any noise at all? Could be the started. Sometimes if you tap on it, you can loosen up a stuck brush. That should get it working again, but at that point, you’ll need to have it replaced. Either way, it’s worth a shot.

Don’t be shy, give a couple of solid whacks with a hammer. You won’t hurt it.

Ok that does sound right… There isn’t any clicking noise. The starter could be locked… It actually happened once be for. I left it for an hour and tried it again That time it did click inane it ran fine …A day later I tried to start it but this time out it would not start…The fact that when I trie to start it now there is no clicking noise and the amp gauge is discharging I’m inclined to agree that it’s a starter problem…So thank you for your help

All:

The car refused to start this weekend and I could get it to fire
intermittently by moving/cleaning the relay closest to the firewall
on the right fender well under the hood (beneath the black plastic
shield with two screws). I swapped the relay with the one next to
it and now the horn doesn’t work but the car does start. The relay
is definitely the culprit. I was hoping to stop by the dealer
today after work and before school but they want a part number from
the top of the relay and I am 45 minutes from home. Does anyone
have that part number?

Thanks,

Ed Fisher (who without this forum would not have known to start
looking at relays in the first place)–

No start condition. Cleaned/moved relay closest to the firewall on
the right underhood fenderwell (beneath the black plastic cover
affixed with two black plastic screws) and could get intermittent
start. Switched it with neighboring relay and now the horn doesn’t
work so the relay is the culprit. Can anyone provide me with the
part number for that blue-topped bugger? I wanted to pick one up
tonight but I am 45 minutes away from the vehicle.

Bit more detail, I’ve just been out to the car and had a look.
The number I gave before must be a newer Jaguar Number

The Relay, Blue in colour, on top is marked
HELLA 12V
4RA
003 510-68

On the side is
Jaguar

According to the Parts & Service Manual, Nigel is correct that part

is ‘‘DAC 7686’’. This should be a light blue relay.–

The DAC7686 is the unsealed version. LHF6703AA is the
sealed version.–

Ok thanks every one for your suggestions… Actually the relay did work and the car now starts again with out any trouble. I installed it at the beginning of the summer, I don’t really use this web sight that much these days but It has has helped me considerably for many years

Thanks for returning and updating the thread. It will undoubtedly help others in the future.

@Ed_Fisher is correct.
The blue relays should be replaced with a water tight relay.

See the attached jaguar technical service bulletin titled

" Inoperative Blue Relay –

Oxidized or Damaged Terminals –

Checking/Replacement Guidelines MODEL 1988-94 MY Sedan Range DATE 5/97"

which suggests replace them all with sealed, water-tight relays.
