Morning everybody. I recently purchased a 1984 XJ6. It’s been a wonderful new addition to my life and I still can’t believe it’s mine. I smile every time I see it. I have some things I need to work out though. Today’s question has to do with the seatbelt alarm. When I start the car I hear the belts alarm and see the red light on the dash. I plug my belt in. The alarm goes off but the red light on the dash stays on. Now here’s where it gets weird: When I turn off the car and unhook the belt, the light goes off but the alarm sounds. This is with car off and keys out of the ignition. My only solution has been that when I turn the car on, plug the belt in and see that red light, to shut off the car and then restart it. This seems to reset the belts brain somehow. My question is can I simply disable this alarm sound along with the red dash light? Thanks for your help here.

You can simply pull the light bulb and disconnect the buzzer as long as this is not part of a safety inspection. Or rewire the buzzer as a lights-on warning, if you find the directions on the forum.

Thank you David I appreciate you getting back to me.
In case you haven’t found the buzzer, it’s behind the glove box high on the firewall, a mysterious white plastic dome shaped thingy, with about 16 wires coming out all around a multiconnector plug, mounted on a 2 x 3 inch box.
I had to pull the plug off mine the first time I disconnected the battery as I had obviously blown its mind somehow and nothing I did would shut off the alarm.
I completely forgot about it until I read your post. I have NO warning buzzers or warning lights except BAT, OIL, and High Beam. This suits me just Fine!

There is no loud ‘alarm’ originally fitted, Doug; the seat belt warning light comes on with ign ‘on’ - and somebody sits in either front seat without fastening the seat belt. There may be a buzzer originally installed, but most POs have disconnected it - some only wanting the soundless buzz of driving without a seatbelt…
A PO has fitted some aftermarket alarm, Doug…? Which should definitely be disabled…

Hi Frank. I think the buzzer sound is stock. I don’t think it was fitted in later. It will be nice when I get it sorted out.
Thanks for your thoughts
Doug
That’s what I did.
A transformation of something extremely irritating to something extremely useful !
What I did:
I power the buzzer from the positive lead that powers the side lights at the light switch and ground it through the drivers door switch. It will thus buzz only when lights on and drivers door open.

Thank you. That’s a good idea.
What happens if you sit in the passenger seat, Doug…?
If symptoms are the same, the problem is likely in the seat belt logic unit. Which seems to be a ‘Federal only’ fitting…
