Need assistance in reading key code on door lock barrel discs. See photos

Took driver door lock out of xj6 to get code needed to have new tibbe key made and i can read the code pretty easily but im unsure which end would be the beginning and which end would be considered the end of the code. Please see photos. Thank you for any assistance on this.

Clayton,

You posted to the wrong Jag-Lovers list. None of the Series I, II, or III
saloons discussed on this list ever came with the Tibbe keys. Although
your car is badged as an XJ6 it is different in just about every way from
the cars discussed here. I recommend that you post your question to the
Jag-Lovers “XJ40” list. XJ40 was the internal Jaguar code name for your
model and is used to distinguish you particular model XJ6 from the others.

I’ve had Philip with Triple-C Motor Accessories cut some tibbe keys for me. He’s fast and efficient. He’s very knowledgeable, so he may have an idea on how you can get the code for your key. I think he’s based in AZ. I don’t suppose you have any up close photos of the key you misplaced- that’s how he determined my code.

Not sure how you can get the code however door locks and even trunk lock use the same code as the ignition … so MAYBE if all else fails you could send a lock barrel (this would involve removing either the door handle or trunk lock) to a smart locksmith and have them match it up like that?

here’s the way the Tibbe codes are read/cut BTW

There might be a way to get the code after all!

Reading further on the triple-c site, he includes a link to the Jaguar publication on repairing the locks. Although the ign lock is not serviceable, I see that with a bit of effort and study (page 6 in the link below) you can in fact read the code of the door handle lock simply by examining the discs through the slot in the lock barrel.
Of course you will have to remove/release the door handle to get at the lock barrel, but with patience and good preparation (masking paintwork for starters!) you can do it yourself.

good luck!

That is my copy of a paper document that I created when I was at the Jaguar dealer. I took it out of my 3 ring binder to the service office and used the copy machine to make a few copies. I then used a flatbed scanner on my computer to convert to .jpg.
After that I made a word document and then a .pdf. with ADOBE ACROBAT 4.0.

Sorry for the poor quality but Jaguar did not offer it in electronic form, only a paper document from the 1990s.

I see that it has made it’s way around the internet over the last 15 to 20 years or so.

Im sorry but I didnt get the attatchment. Could you please re send. I removed the door handle on driver side and have photos of the lock barrel discs but im unsure of which end would be the beginning and which end would be the end. I am going to upload the photo to see if anyone can help me decipher my new dilemma. Thank you for your response.

Clayton,
Can’t answer you directly, but if you look at this link, the key numbering starts from the ‘blunt’ end of the key itself, so I suppose the lock discs must be numbered in the same way - i.e from the outside of the door as you insert the key.

Look for TSB 76-64 internet search.
Gus has it on his site.

Here’s the relevant info clipped from two links above. You should be able to figure it out now. As Bryan says, start at the blunt end.
Not the clearest pic of the last disc in the array but it looks to me like your code reads 1-1-3-1-3-1-2-2 ?
