On the left side on floor is a pedal, bout 3" x 5", no info on it anywhere. 88 xj40 vdp. New to all this.

Isn’t that the left foot footrest? Don’t try pressing it - it won’t work! 
Useful on a stick-shift car to keep your foot off the clutch pedal
