Last Christmas, the weather was very nice here in New York. So I took the
Jag to my mother’s house in New Jersey. It was the first time the family had
seen the car.
I offered my sister a ride, and she jumped at the chance. I was surprised
at how enthusiastic she was, but then again, it’s my sister we’re talking
about. We rode out along the back roads of Jersey, enjoying the unexpectedly
warm weather, and the pure joy of E-Type motoring. On a long straight, I let
it out, my sister breaking into joyous laughter as the speedometer edged up
to the ton.
When we got back, my mother met us at the curb. “This is my son’s car”,
she said, loud enough for the neighbors to hear. All in all, a very happy
day for me. Little did I suspect that I would never see my mother and sister
together again.
My mother died in June. She had sworn that she would not bury her
daughter, and she got her wish. My sister died this weekend, the victim of
lung cancer. I had stopped by to see her on the way to the biennial. She
struggled up to the window to get a glance at the car. If only we could have
gone for another ride.
