Outside mirror installation

My outside mirror was damaged long ago and I took it off. I have now bought a new one but forgot how it was connected to the car but I am sure I did not take off the inside door panel to install. See 3 pictures of new parts and holes in the door

No instructions with mirror but I have a guess on what to do

  1. Insert the plastic bass plate with two “towers” in holes in door
2 Place the swiveled mirror on base plate so screw holes are visible and aligned with towers
3 Screw in two screws into the towers
My guess is that screws will cause towers to expand and be seized tightly in holes in the door

But I am not confident in this guess so please advise if it right or wrong before I “screw” everything up

May I ask where did you buy your replacement mirror? Is it made by TEX? I have tried to buy a left hand door mirror for my 1971 Jaguar XKE OTS from several suppliers, but when they arrive they are not identical to the original and are not functional.

When install my mirror I used metal clips that the screw will attach to. Much more stronger.

Thanks

PhillpW, David,
Pretty much everything that can be discussed about these cars has been, many times over. :grinning:
The Jag-Lovers archives are full of useful information on most topics, including external mirrors. Here is a link to a thread I started in 2021 about the mirrors for my 1969 E-Type FHC that has a lot of helpful information and comments.

I hope you find it helpful.

Paul

Paul, very helpful information, I have the original mounting holes for the mirror. My problem is that I have order replacement mirrors and when they arrive, made by TEX from England, they do not match my original mirror. The curve of the stem where the mirror attaches is different from the original. Instead of pointing straight to the rear of the car it points down and toward the driver’s window. So when you attach the mirror, the only thing you can see is your shoulder. Where did you purchase your mirror?

Thanks

David Farley

Paul, I can send you pictures of my issue if you will send me your email.

David

David,
As stated in my linked post I purchased the mirror for the right hand side of my E-Type from SNG Barratt in New Hampshire, USA. That post also included the SNG Barratt part number for the right hand mirror. My original left hand mirror remains in fine shape and both adjust properly for viewing for me from the driver’s seat. They look very similar, but not identical, and since they are on opposite sides of the car it is not an issue for me. As mentioned in the string from 2021 the plastic mounting pad and screws in the SNG Barratt kit were insufficient in my opinion to keep the mirror from shaking and vibrating while driving so I installed some steel clips that I had on hand and that resulted in a much firmer mounting. So the mounting of the new SNG Barratt mirror on the right side is much like the original mirror on the left side.
Where did you get your mirror that points in the wrong direction?

Paul

David,
Just post the picture of your mirror on Jag-Lovers where all can see it and offer suggestions. BTW, do realize that the angle of the face of the mirror can be adjusted?

Paul

Attached are pictures showing that both my original mirror and the replacement from SNG Barratt are stamped with “TEX VIEWMASTER”

Paul

This has been discussed before, and, AFAIK, the correct stem is NLA.

However, somewhere in the archives is a post from one person who successfully heated and bent the stem on a mirror to make it usable.

turns out it was easy to find.

John,
It is really amazing how much has been discussed on Jag-Lovers before. I use the archives regularly and it is the first place that I go to when facing a challenge with my Jaguars. Often the answer is just a few clicks away and then I am on my way in minutes back to work.

I agree it’s an amazing resource. And just like Google, or any other search engine, it sometimes takes some creative phrasing to find what you are looking for.

All this is great discussion but no one has answered my question of whether my proposed installation procedure is correct or not. Does anyone know? I cannot find an answer in the archives but maybe my search is faulty as well.

PhillipW,
I think I answered your questions about mounting the mirror twice, once in the email string above and in the details of the string I started in 2021. Did you read them?
The right side mirror that I purchased from SNG Barratt had a plastic mount with screws like the one you purchased. I installed as you described above in 2021 but later I decided that the mirror wiggled too much for my liking so i removed that mirror, installed two steel clips similar to the ones on the left side, and reinstalled the mirror with the screws provided in the kit. The mirror is much mor steady now and I am pleased with how it looks and operates. I recommend that you review my post from 2021 for these details, pictures, and more.

I agree with you, that mounting system is rubbish. I made a metal that mimicked the plastic gasket, welded two nuts to it, and epoxied it to the inside of the door skin.

David Farlsy
To answer your original.question, I bought the mirror from sng barratt, part C28517. There is a TEX marking inside…

Per your and others suggestions, I am not going to try the screw in plastic method but go to hardware store and hope to find metal clips like yours

Many thanks to all

Paul thanks a lot for the Pics. Now I know what to look for. I found out today that some of the suppliers for Jaguar Mirrors are selling knock offs. Even inside the swan neck is stamped TEX, they are made in China. That is why they are not the same .

David

I used Rivnuts worked like a charm…… I also made a rubber gasket rather than plastic to get a better seal

Yes, with the angle adjusted to its limit. I can only see my shoulder.

Thanks for the help

David Farley

Phillip, I am sure you will be satisfied how secure it makes your mirror.

David

John, thanks for the info. I would be reluctant to heat is hot enough to bend. I would be afraid that it would turn blue and discolor the chrome.
