Overdrive on Mark 2 not working

The overdrive on my Mark 2 isn’t working. It has been fully overhauled. If the engine oil was very low, would this disable the overdrive?

Hi … welcome!!

I seem to recall @KopiK got quite good at troubleshooting the MkII overdrive.

He’ll be along shortly all being well.

In the meantime his restoration journal website (linked on his id page) is well worth your trouble.

Welcome to the forum.

No, engine oil has nothing to do with Overdrive. But gearbox oil does, it is
common with OD. And if it is too low or wrong type, OD does not work.
Other reasons could be electrical: solenoid broken or wrongly adjusted,
something wrong in the wiring or in switches at gearbox (reverse and 4th gear).

Check first gearbox oil level (i.e. fill it up). If you are not sure it is correct one,
change it. Remember to drain OD also, it has separate drain plug. If that does
not help, check wiring, does solenoid pull when you have ignition on (not necessary
running), OD switch engaged and 4th gear selected.

Report what you found and we’ll help you more.

Easy check , in 4th gear ignition on , operate overdrive , you should hear it click in and out , when you operate the switch .
If you can , like said , check oil , worth cleaning the filter , this gets overlooked a lot !

Sage advice , as always Ian :+1:
