Pairing remotes

Hi people,

now that I have sorted out my power drain issues, next up is getting the remotes to work.

Currently, I have replaced the batteries in both remotes and, before doing so, cleaned (sanded) the contacts so current can flow. I have tested this with a multimeter and pressing the button does indeed cause a small powerdrain, so I am guessing the remotes themselves are functional.

The car so far is non-responsive to the remotes. I have tried the pairing procedure for a battery in boot car, and just to be sure I got it right, this is what I did:

-set ignition to on position (the normal key position when you are driving)
-turned of the security system using the switch in the central console
-set the ignition to the off position
-turned on the security system with the switch
-waited a second
-flipped the switch quickly 4 times (off/on, off/on, off/on, off/on)
-pushed and held down the button on the remote for 10 seconds at least

This however had no result. No audible results, no flickering lights, nothing.

Is this the correct procedure?

If so, I am guessing check fuses and possibly the fusebox board for cold joints? Are there any other tests I can perform?

Regards,

Ramses

Here are the instructions I have, depending on model year:

92-94 XJ6 Range:

  1. All doors, hood & trunk must be closed
  2. Turn security system switch (located in center console) “ON”
  3. Turn ignition key to position 1
  4. Turn security system switch “OFF”
  5. Turn ignition “OFF”
  6. Cycle security system switch ON/OFF 5 times within 5 seconds; a tone will sound & overhead console lights will come on; a beep will continue every couple of seconds while in programming mode
  7. Press the first transmitter’s button & a confirmation tone will sound (note the overhead lights will also flash); press the next transmitter’s button; repeat for up to 5 transmitters; there must be a total of five button presses so if less than 5 transmitters are being programmed the button on any one of the transmitters being programmed must be pressed multiple times
  8. Turn security system switch “ON”
  9. Open & close driver’s door
  10. Transmitters are now programmed

95-96 XJ6 Range

  1. Open trunk lid
  2. Open drivers door
  3. Turn ignition switch “ON”
  4. Rock valet switch (located in center console) 5 times, a single chirp and
flash of headlamps indicate module has entered learning mode
  5. Press the arm/lock (larger) button of the first transmitter. This
transmitter will be linked to position 1 of the seat / steering column / mirror memory. A tone will confirm transmitter code was accepted. (note: if no buttons are pushed within 15 seconds, module will exit out of learning mode)
  6. Rock valet switch once, 2 short chirps will indicate system is prepared
to accept 2nd transmitter. Press the arm/lock (larger) button of second
transmitter, 2 tones will confirm transmitter code was accepted
  7. Repeat step 5 for a total of up to 5 transmitters
