Piston clearance

Hello E-Type fans.

I am posting to this list in hopes of getting an answer from someone
who knows more about what the correct piston clearance should be than I
do.
I have a 65 E-Type with 4.2 engine that a PO had started to rebuild.
He had installed .030 over pistons but the machinist had given them
up to .008 clearance and up to .002 taper in 2 cylinders. I now
have a set of .040 over XJ6 pistons that I want to install. What is
the proper clearance. I do not plan on racing the car, but it will
be a little faster street machine with its Isky cams, alloy flywheel,
and a few other goodies. I do not want the pistons so tight that they
gaul during a fast sprint, but neither do I want them to sound like
marbles in a bucket.

Any information greatly appreciated.

TIA

I’d be interested in knowning whether you can punch these things out to
.040 over without going through the liner.

93 Festiva (not the fastest of the lot, but the most reliable)
