[pre-xk] Horn button contact details for 1937 1.5L

All,

The '37 1 1/2L project is getting very close to completion. I have
the wiring nearly complete - only the headlamp installation and
steering wheel multi-switch remain. When I took the steering wheel
off this car a couple of years ago, the horn button contact was
missing. Now I need to get the contact, or at least make something
that will work. Does anyone have a diagram of what exactly is
going on under the horn puch? Or a photo?

Thanks in advance!

Well, I came up with a neat fix for the missing horn-button
contact. It only took about 3 hours and $10 in hardware store
supplies. The horn push travels about 1/8’’ before contact is made,
and the horn push can be pressed further, to the end of its travel,
since the contact floats under spring pressure on a brass tube.

I’ve uploaded the photos - when they are posted I’ll send the
link.–

That’s a very neat solution David. I may have to rty it myself.
The original contacts . while resemblimg the later Mk4 style are a
different size.
A great solution.–

Ed,

One detail that I forgot to photograph until it was too late: the
horn push has a small screw in the center - I guess for the wire
and/or original contact mechanism. I used that screw to hold a
thick brass washer, after turning the washer OD to snugly fit the
ID of the compression sleeve. Now the sleeve assembly is well-
centered on the horn push. The backside of the sleeve assembly is
very flat, and the red RTV is just a thin smear, which is why it
squeezed out neatly all around the diameter.

I used RTV instead of epoxy, figuring it would be strong but
removable in the future - just in case.–
