[pre-xk] Mark IV half shafts

Mark IV half shafts , as we owners know , are the almost only
less than perfect part of the world’s most desirable car [ along
with alloy conrods]

However in the past we have had new ones made in batches on NC
machinery. Modern better steel, and the NC machining means the
taper angle is exactly right.

I have replaced them in my cars, but I had a call this morning
from an SS Register member, Ian Mullins, who is having another
batch run.

As is usual with these items, orders are taken, a batch run off
and divvied up. They are only made to pre-order.

Depending on numbers ordered it is thought the price would be about
AU$ 220-240 each.

If anyone is interested, I can pass on Ian’s contact details and
you could order direct from him.

I am a bit ignorant on Mk V applications but on one batch, I got a
pair done for my early Mk VII, which are the same shaft but made in
a different length.–

Hi Ed,

Possibly, but how much do they weigh, as shipping in here
may be bit of a burden?

And what’s the problem with them? They break?

I do not know that the local MKVII owners and the very few
MKIV/MKV owners would have much trouble.

Perhaps it only occurs with your level of engine condition
and performance and drag racing and track time?

I don’t think I’ll be too hard on my old gal (MKV DHC) if I
ever get her back on the road!

And BTW are we talking about the drive shafts in the rear
axle? No? Sorry for my lack of terminology.

Cheers,

Yes they are teh drive shafts and the old 2 HA type were very
prone to breakages.
2 HA were also used on early MK VIIs. Where they also broke.

After that they changed the inside spline pattern to more but
smaller splines.

personally I thjink the problem was with the poor quality steel
used.
There are now much better materials available.

Another risk factor can be if a second hand half shaft is used
but put inthe car on the opposite side to where it came from.

One can often see where they have developed a ‘twist’ at the
splines.

I honestly haven’t got a weight for them, obviously not light. but
other listers in Europe have enquired and if it was me , I’d
consider sending a batch over there all together.
Which would be cheaper.–

Since you mention 2HA I deduce you mean the Salisbury or
Dana axle. Some Mark Vs used an axle made by ENV which is
quite different.
The part number for the 2HA half shafts is 2HA-005/6 which
is also in early Mark VII, superseded by 2HA-005/13.
Looking up the Timken bearing number I see the shaft
diameter is 1.3125’’ so with a length of about 30’’ I estimate
the weight for a pair at about 23 lbs or 11 kgs.
Axle shafts get a lot of torsional stress in one direction
from starting off and general driving, but not usually a lot
from going in reverse.
Being the same on both sides, it is very possible that a
restorer could put them on the opposite sides and the
reversed torsional stress could contribute to breakage.
There would also be reversed shear stress on the splines.
This problem occurs in torsion bar suspension, which is why
the torsion bars are labeled for left and right.
I wonder if one could use 4HA axle shafts with the 4HA side
differential gears in a 2HA? Has anyone ever looked into that?–

Rob

I haven’t heard of 4 HA half shafts being used

I’ve seen hypoid ENV diffs used in SS Spiral bevel housings
with the side gears changed.

I don’t have the figures in front of me but the 2 HA half shafts
were made of pretty poor steel and the replacemants are from much
better material.

I don’t know anything much about Dada.

I thought they were of the 4 HA type.

I would however think it would be easier to just pull then old
shafts, stick teh new ones in and not have to remove the whole rear
axle and dismantle and set up the diff, which in labour costs
would be as much as buying new half shafts.–

Greetings All,

Was wondering what the difference was between these half-

shafts/axles and the ones for my SS1.

Mainly interested in having a spare set as the I'm sure the

ones I have have some time on them.

     Thanks, Bob Lovell--
