[pre-xk] Mark V Engine Mount Bolts

Forward progress!
My Mark V engine and gearbox are reunited on the chassis
after an 11 year separation.

Looking over the old bolts that attached the rectangular
mounts to the chassis brackets, they didn’t look right. So I
looked in the parts catalogue, and I can’t find them. I also
checked the '38-48 saloons and the XK120 parts books, since
both those models used the same rectangular mounts, and I
can’t find the bolts in these either.

Maybe the writer of the engine parts lists thought they
belonged in with chassis parts, and the writer of the
chassis parts lists thought they were engine parts?

Anyway, does anybody have any easily at hand such that you
could measure the size? And what type of nuts are used with
them?–

Congratulations Rob, 'tis a thing of beauty!
It’s certainly a satisfying feeling as the
quantity of separate parts shrinks.
Regards, Jon.–

Yep, the boxes of separate parts are melting away…

I decided the 7 missing mounting bolts should be 3/8’’
diameter x 3/4’’ long and since a lot of bolts on the Mark V
chassis are ANF thread, I would make these the same.

Then I discovered something about the rear mounting cross
member, part C.3211 Bracket Assembly Supporting Engine at
Rear. I had taken pictures of it in situ before I
disassembled everything for painting. So I had put it back
on exactly as my pictures showed, with the cross brace on
the front side of the attachment brackets on the chassis
frame. I found with this setup that the front engine mounts
were at the forward limit of adjustment with the bolts in
their slots in the chassis brackets, which didn’t look right
to me. Plate F19 in the Manual shows this cross brace on the
back side of the attachment brackets. It makes a difference
of 9/32’’ in the position of the rear mount relative to the
chassis and the front mount brackets. So I moved mine to the
back side and now the front mount bolts are in the middle of
the slots as they should be.

So my car had been put together wrong by somebody in the
murky past. I suspect this is the reason it had 5/16’’
diameter bolts in the mounts, because some doofus put that
cross brace in wrong and then found the original bolts
wouldn’t fit so he put in smaller bolts.

So I put in 3/8’’ bolts and now it all looks right.

Now on to the drive shaft, where I just discovered somebody
cross threaded an ANF nut onto a BSF post on the C.3929
insulator spool support. Sigh…–

Hi Rob, here are some front engine mount thoughts. My car 628166
and my LHD parts car (later) have the circular front mounts. The
parts car has the front ground strap on the LH-side.

Both cars have the bolts which mount to frame with 0.5’’ AF, 5/16’’
ANF 24 TPI with red paint, 7/8’’ thread length.–

And see page 13A of the 1958 revised Spare Parts Catalogue (which
still may not call out your specific need).–

Thanks, Roger. I have the Oct 1949 edition.
Does the 1958 edition have any 3/8’’ bolts associated with
the C.428 mount?–

Hello Rob, no, the page 13A revisions for front engine mounting
only call out the C.4303 mount hardware with NB.131/7D bolts,
FW.106/T washers on bolts, C.3116/2 nuts, and C.725 shakeproof
washer under nuts. There also is specification for NS.150/7D
bolt (also A.N.F) through engine plate bracket and engine
mounting with C.791 plain washer and FG.108/X spring washer.
All that is added on page 13A appears to only deal with the
later circular mountings which are on my cars. Even though page
13A calls out for NB.131/7D bolts in quantity of 4, the
hardware inventory listing at the back of the catalogue was not
updated and still had the original listing of 3 from the
unrevised edition.

Given the page 13 call out for FN.105/L and FG.105/X which are
5/16’’ B.S.F. nut and washer associated with C.428 mounting, I
would lean towards 5/15’’ B.S.F. bolts.–

Thanks, Roger.
The FN.105/L 5/16 BSF nuts and FG.105/X lock washers called
out in the parts catalogue are for attaching the C.428
rubber mount to the angle bracket on the engine front plate.
I actually have those on my NOS mounts, where others have
mentioned they found metric studs in the repro mounts there.

I put in (7) 3/8’’ ANF x 3/4’’ long BEES bolts, flat washers
and Philidas nuts to attach the 3 mounts to the chassis, and
it all fit, seems to have worked out as intended, everything
looks good.–

Hi Rob, referring to Plate B.42 on page B.56 of Service Manual
shows a photo of the rectangular engine mount and calls out in
photo for ‘‘three bolts securing mounting to engine’’ and also
‘‘two bolts securing mounting to frame’’. Elements of four of the
five bolts, nuts and so on, can be seen in the photo. How
similar are they? They look the same to my eye.

On page 13 of the 1949 Spare Parts Catalogue, under the C.3242
Front Engine Plate section it shows 6 NB.137/6D bolts for
securing bracket to plate. These are ANF 3/8 and use C.3320 3
nuts, again ANF.

But under C.428 is the call out for BSF nuts and washers. I
suspect these are for securing studs in rubber, not mounting to
frame.

On balance 3/8 ANF to frame seems right for these rectangular
engine mounts to frame, as you decided.–

In reply to a message from Roger McWilliams sent Mon 20 Jun 2016:

Yes, Plates B42 and B43 sort of half convinced me that they
should all be 3/8, because I knew the size of those in the
engine front plate, the gearbox tailcase and the chassis
cross member were all 3/8, and in those pictures they all
appear to be the same size.

Incidentally on the angle bracket where it is attached to
the front engine plate, the middle bolt head can interfere
with the nut on the rubber mount, so some careful assembly
is required there. The later bracket for the later round
mount has a countersunk flat head screw here for that reason.–
