[pre-xk] Need an " amperes" gauge for a 34 SS 1 Tourer

In reply to a message from mostlyeuro sent Mon 18 Oct 2010:

The gauges themselves were a generic Smiths amp gauge -20 to +20
that had a spring clip arrangement to hold them to the metal panel

This were not exclusive to SS, I do have new screen printed
metal faces for these [ and all the SS1 tourer faces] as well as
the plastic overlays for the centre dash section.–

Hi Ed,

are all instruments regular Smith only with SS faces?
Or in other words can I use regular Smith instruments and
change the faces?

Basically yes.

You need to get the right sort, of course
And use the right needles. But I have new needles laser cut from
stainless and they will interchange.

And you may find that some had different rims , but generally
they can be mixed together

There is at preseent a Lagonda speedo on ebay which is almost
identical to an SS1 speedo except it has ‘lagonda’ on the face.

The Ammeter , of course was Lucas not Smiths and that didn’t
have the SS logo… I have no idea why not.–

I noticed your enquiry about an amp gauge. Maybe you can
help. I have 2 SS gauges. One is a combination oil
pressure/amp gauge, the other petrol and water. Each is about
3 inches in diameter. I got them at an estate sale. Any ideas
regarding what model car they came from would be appreciated.–

Hi Dennis,
I have a 1936 saloon and it has similar gauges to what you discribe
not sure if the post war cars had them combined.

Hi Dennis,

The SS1 used gauges as you describe in around 1935. These had white
lettering on black background.
The 1936 and '37 SS Jaguars also used gauges as you describe but they
had black lettering on a silver background.
Later cars don’t fit your description.

HTH,

Peter

In reply regarding amp gauges:

Just to complete the information, the gauges that I have
appear light grey in color with black writing including SS.
They could be silver with a layer of dirt.–

Dennis,

They’d be silver with navy blue lettering.

They were used only on 1936/7 saloons… SS Airlines and DHCs used
similar items but with black and white lettering.–
