[racing] How much HP can rear end take?

I was wondering at what point does the Independent rear
break? I want to runs slicks for drag racing and hard
launches and was wonder if the stock rear end is strong enough?–

The stock rear end in a XJ-S is capable of dealing with
about 500 horsepower. That’s a bit of a moving target since
you haven’t mentioned what sort of tire you intend on
using… The wider/sticker the tire (and the heavier the
car) the greater the tendency to snap stuff.

If you intend to do launches do not plan on using the stock
trailing link arrangement. That will have the rear axles
moving violently from toe in to toe out. Instead modify the
pick-up point to a spot in line with the inner pivot of the
suspension… Rob Beere will sell you a kit if you aren’t up
to the fabricating skills.(and they have a picture on their
web site) At the same time plan on taking the rear end cage
off rubber and solidly mount it…

In fact for any kind of serious racing do that modification
you can’t believe how much better the car handles when it’s
done right… You may as well get a deep ring and pinion
ratio. 4:11 is starting suggestion for most racing where
acceleration is critical… You may need to go lower if you
are using a 5 speed trans mission where 5th is overdrive.–

I have some pix from Group 44 racing,XJS cars had removed the
entire rear cage, and made a suspension to fit the car, still
IRS, all to correct wheel alignment on and off throttle.

the pix are out of a magazine(OLD ), donno if they would be
able to email?–

On My XK-E V12 race car I did away with the cage completely.
Incorporated the rear end into the roll cage. I did that in
an attempt to both lighten and make the rear end easy to access.

Wound up using 12 inch vented rotors with a disk 1.250
inch thick… If you limit droop and do a little careful
grinding it can be done…–

An independent rear suspension is more expensive to produce
and maintain than a solid rear axle. The system includes
several moving parts, each of which needs to be designed and
manufactured to exact specifications that is why we have to
give a little care of it.__________________________________________________________

You did not say which model.
The first design is basically a Dana 44.
But the U joints are relatively weak, IRS is notorious for
wheel-hop in drag racing.

Even the serious Vette guys put in a live axle for the drags.–
At over $3 a gallon for gas I want it 100 octane and leaded!

It’s torque that breaks rear ends not HP.

From my experience when you start putting more than 450lb/ft. into
the rear end it’s the half shafts that are the problem, they twist.–

Im about to do the same with my XJS so the question is then where
is the next weak point?

Its fairly easy to fix the drive shafts but will that then make the
rear end bullit proof?
I know that an IRS is not the best solution to go fast straight
ahead but dont really put in a rigid axle and a 4link.

With a twin turbo set-up the tq will be quite dramatic but since Im
using a auto gear box it will be a bit ‘‘softer’’ for the rear end.
