[racing] Jag engine 1/4 mile time?

Friend of mine wants to go drag racing with a Jag engine
in a dragster chassis.
Anybody know what the fastest 1/4 time is? I know the
magazine did a run off but I can’t find my copy of the
results…–

is this a rail dragster or a full body car.

drag racing is about two MAIN ingridents,

Power to weight, and tire grip.

thats it, all the other things you can figure out as you
experiance racing, seat time etc.

IMPO, it will be difficult to get 5.3L or 7L jag V12
doing
serious numbers against, tried and proven V8s.

and of course the class they put you in will have some
bearing on the whole thing, is engine stock or have power
adders on it?

power adds , like Nitrous, or supercharging, or
Turbocharging.

WOW, just had a brain storm, be the first with a
NITROMETHANE fuelled Jag V12, dont waste time with alcohol,
go right to NITROMETH!!

Yeah,Yeah. go for it. with mechanical injection.

comon MG you makin me think again!!

Hi Ron;
It’s a older rear engine dragster. Used to run a Big block
Chevy in the econo dragster class. Engine went POW! BANG,
Clank- clank,… used to have a turbo 400 trans behind it
so he figures all he needs to do is make front motor mounts.
He wants to start off with a stock engine and work his way
up (I sold him 5 of my V12’s (2 w/turbo 400’s behind them)
As for Nitro? I don’t think the head can be made to flow
large enough to flow Nitro. Plus the idea of getting a 12
cylinder mag with enough jolt to fire the charge regularly
is daunting to say the least…
The early blocks had a drive that could be modified to
run 2 Mags and I suppose somebodies built a 6 cylinder
magneto’s with enough to fire off the ignition in that flood
of nitro.
On top of that it takes a much longer stroke to use the
full power of nitro since it’s so slow burning relative to
gasoline…
A V12 will go out to near 500 Cu.in but it get’s pretty
weak to get there… Not to mention the need for a top deck
plate to stabilize the cylinders…
Finally NHRA won’t allow V12’s in their top classes… They
specifically limit engines to V8’s.
He wants to run the V12 up to 10,000+ RPM eventually just
to hear it scream. Since the stock V12 was tested to 7800RPM
before the valves bounce I suspect 10,000 is achievable.
Early on I tried to get him to turbo the engine but since
he’s more interested in the scream than real power he’s
decided on open exhuast.
His next engine (when he blows up the first one) he intends
to weld up a manifold for three Holly 4 barrels. (he’s a
darn good fabricator)Then eventually use a GMC 12-71 blower
on top…
He’s keeping things as stock as he can. except to use
heavier valve springs. Once pistons fail or rods etc. exit
the blocks on a regular basis he’s going to go to better
parts…
He bought the whole mess from me for $2500 and since I
still have nearly a dozen v12 motors left available it’s
pretty cheap way to develop the V12. Regrind the camshafts
for $150 each and probably buy a 100 high compression
pistons in bulk…
The only real bragging rights he’s looking for is fastest
Jag engines in 1/4 mile… Jaguar World magazine had 1/4
mile track event but I can’t find the results…–

Hi guys.

For the record, 6 cylinder XK’s were often dragged in the
1960’s and 1970’s.

Travel Agent is a good example. With quad SU’s running a wet
blower…

Actually, my friend / machinist put a jag engine into a rail
dragster in the 60 and won the national championship. His name is
Roy Chambers and now runs RC Automotive in Maryland.

Still has a banner in his shop saying ‘‘World’s Fastest Jaguar’’
with a big jaguar leaping cat.–
