I am trying to import a Jaguar D Type replica from England.
This particular car used a 1975 XJ6 as the donor car. I know
it is exempt from EPA and DOT regulations as it is over 25
years old. One problem may be that cars beginning in 1968
had to have catalytic converters. Anyone had any ideas on this?
The other idea is to ship an old XJ6 with a USA title to
England and have a replica D built there.
And HELP and/or ADVICE is appreciated.

is that a Texas thing? I know of no 1968 car anywhere in the world
that came new with catalysts. I used to send BMC minis to Ohio (up
until 1979) and never had trouble about cats. Are you quite sure
about this?–

Charles.
I imported a D-Type which used a 67 420G as the donor and that was
certainly exempt from a DOT safety and EPA emissions perspective.
The car had the id of the 420 so the orginal specs were pre-
emmissions.
The rules say pre 1968 or over 21 years can be imported under
category E which is excluded or exempted. So a 1975 donor is over
21 years old therefore with proof of the age this should not be an
issue. Then there are the kit car/ replica rules and this is where
it gets muddy. And I think where your issue lies.
Ask them for a ruling as the kit car rules are not clear, but
hopefully, the 21 year rule applies to the engine here as well.
There are some other potential gotcha’s down the road. Navigating
the Federal rules is one thing, and then there are the State rules
as well. Have no experience regarding the Texas rules though.
