[racing] V12 HP limits

for you guys interested; Hemmings sports and exotics mag.

interview with Bob Tullius group44 racing, said after 650-
700hp engines were UNRELIABLE for any long races! weak link
was head gaskets and they tried everything they available,
even gas filled O-rings for liner tops!

and his best car builder quote;Brian Fuerstenau said the
V12 E-type was the worst car he ever tried to make into a
race car(and he built many top winner race cars), had
serious polar moment that coulndt be made to work!

and added that the XJS, modded for racing, was the best and
strongest car they ever built, beat many corvettes and fords

jag stopped helpping with money, and TWR,in England got it!
(imagine that?)

so he got out of racing.–

What issue for the Hemmings magazine? What happened to the CD of
the Walkinshaw racing I believe you were offering to the guys here
on the list? Best, JW.

PS: Got to see Tullius and his XJ-S along with the Group 44
Prototypes at Laguna Seca last year at the Jag-Anniversary meet.
Just great engineering and power.–

Seems odd, I recall reading that Jag V12 off-shore race boats
were making 1200 BHP?

Seems they were twin turbo too, surely harder on head gaskets!–
At over $3 a gallon for gas I want it 100 octane and leaded!

Rich; cooling any engine is key to long distance racing, SO
offshore power boats have an OCEAN of cooling water to work
with.

an automobile has only its small cooling system to work
with, SO lets just say you develop a small pressure
leak(like only a tablespoon per lap) after some time you
will get into overheating problems.

automatic lose!

one of the good and bad about Jag V12 is it a flexible
engine , and any type of movement in the power section of
the engine can loosen the gasket seal, thats the bad.

the good is being flexible, things dont crack ot split like
some other ridged power units may do!

and honestly I dont think anyway you mod a Jag v12 , 1200hp
is not going to last very long!–

The race engines used wills/ coopers rings dropped into a
machined groove at the top of each liner, Expensive and hard
to source nowadays. The Cometic gaskets seem to work fine and
hold up under extreme race conditions. Also available in 97mm
bore–
