Rag top coupes?

Just curious. I have made the assumption since first seeing an Etype coupe with one of those Euro style slide back tag tops, that these must be either shop or dealer installs. I have seen 4-5 of them now. Am I correct assuming that? Or did some of the coupes actually come that way for some obscure market? OK stop laughing!

I’m sure someone with real knowledge will chime in soon, but I believe the Webasto sunroofs may have been a Jaguar option, but were never actually installed at the factory. I.e., completed cars were converted somewhere else before delivery.

Personally, I find the sunroof mars the beautiful lines of the FHC, and I don’t really care for sunroofs, even on my modern vehicles. (My wife disagrees).

I think Scott has it right, they were made by Webasto and at one point I considered getting one for my '73 2+2 (obviously  but decided to get an OTS instead…

Pretty sure the period correct unit wasn’t electric and one that was period correct was available back when I was considering it.

Hemmings has a good article on the history of Webasto. I have little doubt that some cars were fitted with their products by factories, especially German marques, but I’ve never seen evidence that Coventry did so. They may have been fitted by dealers, but most were likely aftermarket installations.

I always thought that the Webasto roofs spoilt the clean lines of the Coupe, especially when viewed under way at speed because they tended to billow up from the normal roof line.
