Has anyone ever re-sealed the steering rack on an XK8? Is it do-able in a normal garage without special tools ?

You won’t know until you take one apart. I say that because the right tools are key to success. I have successfully rebuilt a rack for a Vovlo 240 by sourcing the seals on my own. That was a long time ago. I also rebuilt the rack on my 83 XJ6 with the use of a rebuild kit. Does any source sell a seal it for the XK8 rack? I’m asking because haven’t checked. If kits are available than you have an opportunity to tackle it yourself. Many racks require a special spanner wrench. Both times I rebuilt a steering rack I had to make my own.

Yes I’ve seen kits of about 10+ seals listed. I’ve decided I’m going to give it a go as soon as I can free up some space in my garage. I’ve got a MKIV spread about at the moment.
