Rear axle repair notes

I have just rebuilt the rear axle in my Mark 2 and I thought readers might be interested in a couple of things i did. My notes are attached.
The axle was originally noisy at around 40 mph and the noise would come and go as the throttle was varied. At high speeds it was pretty quiet. Stripdown found that the diff bearing preload was inadequate and so the meshing presumably varied enough to make the noise.
I replaced the ring gear and pinion with a used one and having set it up very carefully, the axle is now very quiet.

Thanks for this. Have done gearboxes and O/Ds but never a differential. Paul.
