Rear suspension noise

1984 US spec XJ6 Ser. 3

Transitioning from on to off or off to on throttle causes a faint knocking sound from the right rear, lower, outer area of the passenger compartment. What is the problem?

If it is a suspension bushing, what are the sources for the parts?

Stuart,
It is possible that the rubber of your Propellor Shaft Center Bearing (AAU6066) has failed. I removed and replaced two of them over the past 20 years or so in my Series III saloons due to a pronounced thumping sound on brisk acceleration from a stop. Most Jaguar parts suppliers in the USA (Moss Motors, Welsh Enterprises, SNG Barratt, Terry’s Jaguar Parts, etc) should carry them. You might also find them on eBay.
Search the Jag-Lovers archives for " center bearing" and you will find lots of posts from others as this is a somewhat common problem.
Removal and replacement of the Center Bearing can be a Do-it-yourself task if you have access to a lift.

Paul

Could be many things…
The central bearing as Paul said, half shafts U-joints, IRS bushings, any loose/broken bearing on the rear suspension, worn/loose spline on the output shafts, or even a broken rear hub.
Raise the rear and have a look.

Any sign of vibration, Stuart…?

In addition to Paul and Aristides; check clearances between exhaust etc and body…?
