Removing the Rear Seats

List:
Can anyone recall how to remove the two parts of the rear seats in a series one xj6? I know there are two parts, a fanny rest and a back rest. And that both go side to side in one piece.

Thanks

Lou

I think you wi find there are a couple of screws in the foot well to remove the base then from memory there are a couple of screws where the base butts up to the rear steel work?

If it’s like the S3: one screw on each side holds down the part one sits on. When you remove that you would see two bolts that hold down the backrest which slides up.

…and then you have to lift the rear section upwards.

…and the two screws go in the carpet between the legs and can be hard to see and harder to get back in! Same goes for inserting the backrest into the three slots when putting back together. Not too easy.

A bit more detail.
There are two metal tabs on the bottom front of bottom seat cushion that extend down about 2 or 3 inches(?). Each tab is secured with a self tapping screw.that goes through the carpeting covering the back of the foot well closest to your calves. Remove the screws, lift the front of the seat and yank the seat forward and it should slide out. Looking under the bottom of the seat back you will see two metal u shaped loops extending down, one under each seat back cushion. There will be a large metal washer and a bolt securing the tabs. Remove the screws, pull the bottom of the seat cushion forward slightly and lift to unhook the top of the seat back. It should pop free.
Installation is the reverse of removal. Seat back first, then seat cushion. As some of the posters have said, lining up the screw holes can be tricky. The tabs at the bottom of the back cushion are springy and need to be held down to get the bolts in. A second set of hands comes in handy for that operation.
Good luck. And beware. If this is a car that has been sitting for a long time outside or in a barn, there may be critter nests under the seat cushion. Have fun!
