I am a female looking at a 2005 S-Type Jag,for as long as I can
remember was my dream car. This car has 39K on it with an automatic
transmission, should I be worried about transmission problems later
on down the road?–

The S-types seem to have more problems with the transmission than other cars but the
2005 model should be better as it has a different gearbox than the earlier series of cars.
Are you getting the car from a dealer or used car place? If so pay the extra money to get
an extended warranty on the major components (engine, gearbox etc) as well as have
them do a service on the car and change the transmission fluids at that time.
Also this model car has problems with the window regulators (not a big deal) and
sometimes the coolent tank on the car cracks and leaks. Its a bit more expensive but not
that bad.
Have had my 2000 model for 4 years and love it, even with its warts!

Personally I would not wait until 60k to do a fluid change. There are many documented
cases of transmissions failing at anywhere from 35 to 50k miles.
A fluid change is cheap insurance. Do it now and make sure the fluid is fresh. Then do it
every 30k miles. You can buy a lot of transmission fluid for the $2200 I just spent to have
my gearbox overhauled!

Noting the age of your S-Type, was it a Jaguar dealler who
changed the fluid; mine in Peterborough stated they don’t
change the fluid, so thought I’d have to find an alternative
independent (near Cambridge/Peterborough, UK)?
Also what was the cost to do this?
(I have 37k miles on a 3.0SE 2003, but just want to plan on
this change perhaps next year around 46k miles)
Cheers

I had mine done at 30,000 when they added some snake oil to stop the
‘‘eek’’ noise on kickdown, apparently it was discoloured and worth doing.

Yes it was a Jag dealer, they had to drain some off to add the magic eek silencing fluid so I asked them to swap the rest out if it was in any way discoloured, it was so they did. V expensive from what I remember for what it was (67.29 for 3 litres of fluid and no labour). It changed smoother afterwards but that could have been the gearbox being reset.
Cheers

Mine had to have a new box at 13K due the ‘‘yelp’’ on kickdown. They
tried the additive serveral times and re-flashed the firmware on
the gearbox which just made it worse. New box is superb, no
problems at all, so far, fingers crossed.–
