[s-type] ball joint problem

I have recently bought an S type 2000 model SE it has a
problem with the nut of the left hand front ball joint it
keeps loosening itself I have tried tightening it on 2
occasions in the last 10 days but that has not fixed it. I
presume the ball joint will have to be replaced but is there
anything else I need to do. All I can think of is the actual
ball joint itself is not turning properly and somehow
loosening the nut. I notice also the steering wheel becomes
off centre when the nut is loose. Obvious danger so any one
with experience with similar problem please advise. Cheers Rob–

Since you mention steering, I think you are describing the
tie rod end, which does indeed have a ball joint inside it.
It sounds like the ball is rusted or otherwise crunched up
solid so it can’t swivel as it should, and that would cause
the nut to loosen when you make a turn. You are quite right
that it needs a new tie rod end immediately. If your local
repair shop is close by and you want to drive it there, go
slow and be prepared because if it breaks you lose your
steering. Otherwise better flatbed it there. If you want to
change it at home we can advise how, but you will need an
alignment afterwards anyway.–
