[s-type] "By the time I get to Pheonix..............."

Just came back from a trip from the desert to Sedona, Arizona.
Drove my wifes 2004 4.2 S Type and I must say how impressed I am
with that automobile. It performed beautifully over the road at 80
mph + all the way there and back and got 30 mpg on the highway at
80 mph! That really surprised me. The temps were hot outside (over
100F all the way) and yet the car ran beautifully.
This S Type is a great automobile, which compare favorably with my
2004 VDP XJ8. The handling and turning radius is a tad better, I
think.
Anybody else getting this great gas mileage or is this car some
sort of miracle?–

You may recall that I reported earlier this month taking delivery on a
05 S-Type VDP 4.2 in Boise and driving it home to the San Francisco
Bay Area. It was a dealer demo so it had 2700 miles on it, a little
more than broken in.

The stretch from Boise to Winnemucca got us 28.8 mpg (US gallon ~3.8L)
on the first leg of the journey because a long stretch of the route is
a two lane highway that runs through Oregon with its 55 mph speed
limit and an excess of highway patrolmen…

From Winnemucca to Napa was 27.4 mpg. Of course, from the middle of
Nevada to Napa is basically a downhill run!

What I didn’t report was that from Winnemucca to Napa includes a
rather magnificent climb from ~4000 ft to ~8000 ft before heading to
sea level. Your trip from Sedona to Indian Wells would not have
required a climb through a pass so your mileage should have been
better than mine.

Oh yeah, how did you keep it below 80mph? Once out of Oregon with its
overabundance of patrol cars, 80 tended to be the lower limit…

mileage really depends on how you drive… my guess is that at 30mpg you
were not having fun

i remember some great roads between Phoenix and Sedona when i went there 2
years ago. long sweepers, elevation changes, I was having trouble keeping
the E-type below triple digit speeds…

i can never get more than 19mpg with the XKR on long trips, even when i try
to behave
