[s-type] Consumption

Hi there,
I am currently looking for a good used 2002 S-Type. Still, I am a
little worried about fuel consumption. Can anybody tell me a
realistic figure for the 2.5 and the 3.0litre, considering driving
conditions in Germany?
I understand the a Jag will not be as reliable as my good old Honda
Accord Coup  What will I have to expect? What parts have to be
checked before buying?
Thanks for Your support! Holger–

Have a 2000 V8 4.0 S-type with 67,000 miles (100,000km) on it and no problems at
all breakdowns.

Just did several long distance trips and getting 25-26 miles per gallon while on the
road. I drive about 80-82 mph (135 kph) with the air conditioning on all the time.

In town driving its lower, about 19-20 miles per gallon, also with the air conditioning
turned on.

Not sure what parts to check on the 6 cylinder engine. The cars have a problem with
window regulators, lower ball joints on higher mileage cars, radiator overflow tanks
among other things.

Hope this helps,

I have a 2003 4.2 litre Sport S-Type and get a solid 22MPG combined
city/highway. On the road I travel 70-75 and at 80 I’m turning
2000RPM. My V8 Jag gets better mileage that my other 6 cylinder
family cars. Just drive normally and stay off the pedal to the
metal and you’ll do fine. I have 33,000 miles and no problems with
the automobile.–

What kind of mileage are you getting on only highway driving?

Combined city/highway has far too many variables and changes from day to day for
me to use it for anything.

On a decent long run with the cruise set at an indicated 77mph or
66mph depending on the road I am on, I get about 35 mpg - UK
gallon - which is bigger than a US one!
General mixed running it is sitting just now at 27mpg since I reset
the trip at the start of June.
I have not used the brim to brim method so not sure how accurate
the figures are but my old X300 struggled to better 22mpg.–

2003 4.2 v8

I get about 26-27 mpg US at 75mph average on the freeway trip (350 miles each way)

I get around 20 mpg city only

Get around 22-23 mpg mixed in Los Angeles Traffic (about 80% city 20% freeway)

Hope this helps

Hi Holger,

I get as poor as 12-13 l/100 kms if I use the car for commuting to
work and around town - 8 kms only each way. On the Autobahns
accelerating gently but aiming to run at around 130 km/h where
allowed, it comes down to about 9-10 on the computer. I have also
not checked how accurate this is though. Mine is a 2000 3.0 manual.

My 2 litre Fiat Coupe does not do a great deal better on the same
types of usage ( ca 11 around town and 9 on the highways).

A 2.5 I had as a loaner seemed more economical and fast enough.
See if you can compare and take the one that suits you best. The
diesel is supposed to be a good one but I have not tried it.

You should not have too much to worry about with the 2002 models.
Most of the known problems had been fixed. Make sure the automatic
transmission, if that is the way you go, works as you expect. Some
examples are supposed to be a bit odd - harsh changes. The
suspension, even on the later models, is sensitive to correct setup
and poor tyres - vibrations and wobbling steering wheel especially
at around 110 km/h. Check on test drive. The rest of the usual
problems are minor. Major problems are very rare and the cars as
no more troublesome than a Mercedes E-Klasse or BMW 5-Series.
Probably noticably better regardless of what Autobild and the
general German press will want you to believe. Mine is 6 years
old, looks like new and has had no significant problems after the
teething problems of a relatively new model which were fixed under
warranty.

Viele Gruesse aus Sindelfingen,
Neil.–

Hi Holger,

my 2000 3,0 EXE Automatic is about 13,6 in Berlin City
driving and 15 on the motorway, provided my style of driving
(flat oot all the time). The lowest consumption was on a
Jaguar Association Germany touristic rallye from Berlin to
the Baltic Sea with 9,2 l/100 kms although some stints with
more than 200 km/h through the alleys in Mecklenburg. Great
trip!

Best regards,
