[s-type] Cruise control installation

Is it possible to retrofit cruise control on a 1999 V6. Or do I
just have to get a car that already has this feature?–

In reply to both of your questions regarding cruise / steering
wheel, this is an issue I’ve investigated myself.

Firstly, you can swap steering wheels on the cars, the dealers will
relieve you off approx 250 for a new wheel (without airbag
centre). The wheels come either with or without the cut outs on
the side to fit the cruise switches. Which brings me onto the next
item… switches…

Apparently, all S-Type steering wheels have the internal frame &
mounting points to take the switches, but the cowl on the back of
the wheels don’t all have the cut outs thru’ which the switches
pass to mount inside.

This means that (in theory) you can either invest in a new wheel,
or just remove your existing one, trim the plastic and then mount
the switches to your existing wheel. I’ve not got around to doing
this yet, but I will do at some point…!

The switches themselves are approx 40 each I think (one per side)
and then there’s a little wiring loom that you need to buy too (not
sure on price).

Once you’ve got the switches installed and the wiring loom
connected, the last thing you need to do is get the crusie software
activated in the ECU. For this you’ll need either a dealer or an
independant with full diagnostic capabilities.

I have spoken to my local dealer in Brum about this and they were
happy to do the work on the existing steering wheel in my car,
saying it would be approx 1hr labour.

I hope that helps.

Can anyone help as to swapping cruise control from one S-Type jag,
to another S-Type car.
We have two cars, one with cruise, the other without.
The car without is a nicer car, so we want to keep it.
We would obviously like to have cruise control on this car.
Can we take off the steering wheels and swap them, then swap the
ECU’s to get the cruise system on the other car?
The two cars are the same year and engines.
Is this possible, or will the ECU bring faults because of it
finding a totally different gearbox and engine etc.?
Would the ECU then STILL need programming?
The alternative is to buy a wheel with switches and a loom, then
have the ECU re-programmed, if that is what is needed.

Hey !

I’m Thomas from France, and the S-type 3.0 V6 MANUAL is my childhood dream car.

But, as a slighly too fast driver, i definitively need a cruise control on all my cars.

So, as a french reading this topic, i’m not sure if a understood, adding cruise control on the phase 1 2000’ S-Type is simple as replacing the streering wheel by one with the cruise control buttons ?

I phone the two Jaguar dealers in my Area and they refuse to do the modification…

Thanks for help.

Thomas, From Bordeaux, France.

Thomas, I am having similar problems. I have retrofitted cruise in all the jags I have owned in the past thirty years, with no technical problems at all.
So I have a 2001 3.0l Auto. I have fitted the steering wheel from a cruise S-type of the same year. I checked all the other bits were present, and was pleasantly surprised to find they were. From the circuit diagram, I noted that there were no other modules involved and that the cruise is controlled by the General electronic module, or engine ECU. All control signals go to and from that unit.

The cruise did not work! I went through all the components and checked their functionality, all ok. After tearing my hair out for 6 months, I came across a document that described the commissioning of a new 1999 to 2002.5 S -Type. In a checklist I found a tick in a box for enabling the cruise control. Eureka, I thought, all I have to do is get the local Jag dealer to enable it for me. However, they no longer have the software or in fact the hardware to do the job. The latest software is not compatible with our cars. Remember we only have SCP in our cars. Cars after 2002.5 can be fitted with cruise and it is plug and play. If I ever get an answer, or solution I will let you know.

FWIW, I have the Jaguar WDS system and although it has the facility to reprogramme an ECM from cruise to non-cruise and vv, when I tried on my XK8 it kept wanting a code from Jaguar. It looked it needed to be online to make this work.
