In reply to a message from royalcourtie sent Sun 18 Dec 2005:
In reply to both of your questions regarding cruise / steering
wheel, this is an issue I’ve investigated myself.
Firstly, you can swap steering wheels on the cars, the dealers will
relieve you off approx 250 for a new wheel (without airbag
centre). The wheels come either with or without the cut outs on
the side to fit the cruise switches. Which brings me onto the next
item… switches…
Apparently, all S-Type steering wheels have the internal frame &
mounting points to take the switches, but the cowl on the back of
the wheels don’t all have the cut outs thru’ which the switches
pass to mount inside.
This means that (in theory) you can either invest in a new wheel,
or just remove your existing one, trim the plastic and then mount
the switches to your existing wheel. I’ve not got around to doing
this yet, but I will do at some point…!
The switches themselves are approx 40 each I think (one per side)
and then there’s a little wiring loom that you need to buy too (not
sure on price).
Once you’ve got the switches installed and the wiring loom
connected, the last thing you need to do is get the crusie software
activated in the ECU. For this you’ll need either a dealer or an
independant with full diagnostic capabilities.
I have spoken to my local dealer in Brum about this and they were
happy to do the work on the existing steering wheel in my car,
saying it would be approx 1hr labour.
I hope that helps.
