S Type engine - dating block

I posted this in the XK section and thought perhaps the saloon section as well.

"I have tracked down a 3.8 engine and am in the process of rebuilding it. The serial number is 7B61883-8 which I believe shows it to be an S Type originally with 8:1 compression.

Is there a way to identify the year or date of car it was originally fitted to?"

TIA

Pat,

You could try looking for cars listed on the Saloon Data website: http://www.saloondata.com/

Maybe someone has a car listed with an engine close to what you show.

BTW, the Jag-Lovers engine number info seems to confirm that it came from an S Type: http://www.jag-lovers.org/xk-lovers/library/engine_numbers.htm
