[s-type] Leaping Cat Ornament for 2003 S-Type

Does anyone know who might sell a leaping cat ornament for the 2003
S-Type? The hood has changed from the older S-types, so the
leaping cat ornament designed to replace the hood badge doesn’t fit
without drilling holes.–

The Leaper is basically available in the US only as an official Jaguar part. In
Europe, some retailers sell either 3rd party Leapers or they may have imported
original Jaguar leapers from the US.

I have seen one 3rd party plastic (!) Leaper that was glued on the facelifted
hood (it did not look very good). Other than that, you need to do some drilling
to get the Leaper on place on facelifted models. If you look under the hood,
there is a spot where the installation goes.

Best regards,

Jyrki

Greg

Basically, for the UK, if you fit a leaper to an S-TYPE, you take
the risk of having the police ask you to prove in court that it’s
legal - and no one has yet done so! The situation in the UK is very
complex/debatable and one I researched as far as possible a while
back.

Have a read of Part 5 of the article series on leapers that myself
and Ian Cooling wrote in Jaguar World Monthly as this covers saftey
mascots. Part 4 (and Parts 1-3) which intros the 1990s onwards
sprung safety mascots and the legal side is scanned here:

Back issues of Part 5 (which specifically discusses the recent
official mascots including the S-TYPE one) are available from the
publishers. The leapers on cars for export to the USA (which are
legal there) are now made in the UK - Jaguar fit them on the line
prior to export if ordered with the car, otherwise they are
available as an official boxed accessory from many well known
suppliers.

Earlier safety ones were initally made in the USA - easy to
recognise as USA ones have short tails whereas later UK ones have
nothing but a rudimentary stub. Older ones are often available on
eBay.

There is a German firm who make their own design safety leaper
especially for the modern S-TYPE and other models (even the XK).
They do have an EU compliance certificate - whether that makes it
legal under separate and relevant UK safety law is another matter
and one you’ll have to decide yourself as there is no extant case
law I am aware of (the leapers are NOT cheap be warned, I think
close on 200 pounds last time I checked).

Usual disclaimers. No connection with this company etc etc

Guys,

There is another German firm selling leapers that will fit your S-
Type (and other Jags as well) and they are slightly cheaper last
time I looked: around 240 euros. Go to www.arden.de and have a look
for yourselves! They do mail orders.
(and no, I’m not connected to them.)
