[s-type] Misfire

Went for a cruise this morning and the 4.0 started to
misfire. Identical symptoms to previous failures which were
fixed with new plug coils on the offending cylinders. First
time it took over year for an error code to show up, second
time error code instantly. This time no code. Is there a
way to check the health of the 6 possible offenders without
replacing each one at $100 each?–

Rex,

If you have a 4.0l I assume that it is pre 2002 in which case it is the same
as mine. (Slightly puzzled by your statement of 6 possible offenders - mine
has 8). I have had two coils fail neither of which raised any fault code.
The symptoms were that there was a slight misfire at idle which got worse
under load and on hard acceleration the car went into limp mode which feels
like driving on pave.

I have a scanner which can do live data and I used the signal from the O2
sensor to identify which bank the misfire was on. Then I bought one new coil
and simply substituted each one after the other on that bank until the
misfire was gone. I used NGK coils, they are about GBP30 over here in the
UK but I am too cheap to change them all.

I don’t know of any way that an owner might have of checking the coils
without substituting them in the engine. I think that if the misfire is
intermittent the spark is tracking from the coil to ground somewhere due to
slight insulation breakdown.

6 possible offenders as I have recently replaced 2. I
assume the 2 new are OK as the car does not get used much
anymore. Has 225000 km but all highway, high speed.–

Just found my old notes in garage. Have replaced #5 and #6
in the last couple of years. As I recall, #5 is left front,
assuming #6 is next aft. Should do the other 6 at $68 ea or
try to find the offender?–

Decided replacing the remaining original plug coils not cost
effective. Decided to put it back together and drive until
a fault code shows up. Just finished a run around town and
on highway, not a single misfire! Go figure.–

I don’t know if you look at online parts sellers but the
coils are simply Ford parts.
RockAuto has all sorts of coils. You can use the site to
look up part numbers and then get them local at the auto
parts store near you. Tell the parts guy you have a 2001
Lincoln LS 3.9.
