[s-type] s type throwing a rod concern

Hello all
I was at the Enfield peagent over the weekend and I was talking to
a Jaguar specialist about the 3.0 auto transmission and common
faults and he told me the thing to worry about is not the gearbox
but the engine 'throwing a rod 'through the side of the block .now
I would put this down to scare mongering but when I was in the Jag
specialist in November having some work done on my car there was an
S Type on the ramps with a rod through the side of the block!!!so I
assume what he is saying is true.
So how common is this and what fails is it the little end , big end
cap coming adrift or the con rod actually breaking , is there
anything that can be done to prevent this happening ,is there any
strange noises etc that happen leading up to the event to give some
warning before the big bang ,does it happen at low or high speeds .
I’m a little concerned :frowning:
Has anybody any answers to my querie? To put my mind at rest.

I think this was a problem with the V8s not the 3 litre…
