Your local main dealer should be able to tell you when the last
update was made for the 1999 model satnav. I have purchased a 2002
version which is an improvement on the 1999 version, but I do not
rate the satnav installation at all.

My 2005 S-Type puts the SatNav into night mode whenever I turn on the
headlights - I would never drive on sidelights, which I belive are define as
parking lights. Night mode has a black background and is not easy to read at
night, but is impossible to read when lights are on due to poor visibilty
during the day.
If there is a fix for this I’d be pleased to know, bit I’m not holding my
breath.

Press menu on the console and then brightness/contrast once in that
screen you can turn off the automatic switching, as well as adjust the
brightness and contrast settings for each mode. There is a twilight
setting but on my 05 car it doesn’t seem to do a lot.

Thanks Kevin. Today is a great day to test it, and I went to the settings
you described. But the only two options (apart from brightness/contrast) are
Auto and Default - pressing Auto didn’t turn it off. I’m probably missing
something blindingly obvious, but for now I’m still stuck with the black
screen when the headlights are on during the day.
Next option is to get out the handbook!
