My independent mechanic is telling me that my Jaguar, Type S,
2000. with the 4.0 liter has a timing problem. He belives that as
he tried to start the car, the chain jumped the timing gears. I am
wondering just what type of problems this caused. Is this
an ‘‘interferance’’ type engine? That is, did the valve and piston
touch? Research on the Net tells me that this is a real and
frequent problem with the timing chain breaking.
Thanks–

Very common problem. It is an interference engine but most
of the time you can get by doing the timing chains if you
catch it early.–

Amazing!! I’ve been dealing with issue now for the last 3 months!
Angry as hell. I too have a 2000 S-type V8. I can tell you
straight up, the problem with the timing chain tensioners are
real! I wasn’t aware of any such problem until one day I started
my car. That’s all, just started my call. Now I’m being told I
need a new engine at a cost of $11,000. Cracked valve, bent
piston. I’m heartsick. This car has 43,000 miles on it. 23,000
that I’ve put on it. Looks like it just came off the showroom
floor. Well maintained and pampered. I’m having it towed home this
week to put in my garage until?? Tried to get help from
Jaguar…no luck. You see it’s out of warranty (by time, not
miles). Jaguar Customer Service is terrible. ‘‘Worst financial
investment I’ve ever made’’. There’s kits out there to upgrade, but
you have to know there’s an issue first. I feel your pain my
friend…thanks for letting me vent.–

Having MOT tested my S-type Sport, - I need new tyres. Now I have Pirelli P
Zero (245/40 - ZR 18). After a 7000 km drive through Europe this summer, -
and general driving at home (Bergen in Norway), I have experienced the tyres
having a very firm grip on the road. But noisy. (I chickened out at 200 km/h
at the highway in Germany).
Lovely holiday however, I enjoyed most the astonishing Cinque Terre coast in
Italy (Tuscany) and the Alps in Switzerland (Jungfraujoch!)
Any suggestions on which tyres that match the car best? (Keep in mind the
climate of western Norway, - not quite like in California
