[s-type] Transmission oil on S type R

Happy new owner of a S type R 2003 with 37.000miles. What a
fabulues car this is !!! Low profile in traffic but excellent
performer, especially in sport mode!!! Very nice.
I want to make an oil change; motor and transmission. I was
thinking some synthetic 5W30 API sm would be nice for this modern
machine.I can not find anything on the transmission oil.
Transmission is zf6hp26 I think. Also used in BMW’S. Any hints for
the oil to use. Is there a place where I can get filter and
pangasket besides the dealer??
greetings

Hermpie,

The transmission fluid used is Shell M-1375.4
It was developed specifically for the ZF 6 speed transmission.

I believe the filter is integral with the pan and can not be replaced
separately.

While the transmission is advertised to be ‘sealed for life’ I recommend
renewing the fluid as you indicated. Early fluid has been reported as not
having the correct lubricating properties. In my personal case changing the
fluid (required due to torque converter replacement) positively and
noticeably improved the transmission’s shifting smoothness.

Good luck with the purchase. Come visit http://www.styperregistry.com

Chris,

Wish I had seen this post earlier!! While you are talking about a 2003 model S-Type
the early style gearboxes have the same “filled for life” system for fluid.

Just finished a drive from my house in Phoenix to the mountains. Got to about 50
miles North and thought everything was fine on my 2000 S-Type 4.0 V8 car.

All of a sudden while cruising in drive (5th) the car shuddered twice pretty hard within
the space of a second then dropped down into 4th gear. The rpm’s wavered a bit and
I manually selected 4th gear and it became a bit better.

Ended up completing my trip but when I stopped the car at my destination the
message that I was worried would show up was there. “Tranmission Fault” and the
two lights on either side of the information display.

Drove the car home afterwards and while it made it, the entire trip was done in 4th
gear. When within a mile of home I tried 5th and it was not happy, so quickly shifted
back into 4th gear.

Anyone ever have this? Have I shelled a transmission? Any ideas what it could be?
Before this time the shifting was becoming a bit sporatic and not as smooth as
normal .The car has 71,100 miles, right in the range where the tranny’s go out in the
early S-Types.

Have found an overhauled transmission here in town for $1400 plus installation. Sure
would be nice to find a cheaper way to fix this but with this mileage and the S-Type
history with transmissions my faith in this gearbox is not very high.

Appreciate any suggestions or help.

Thx,

Joe

I hadn’t seen this before:

Of course a GP driver would have his meters set way too high as the
passenger (journalist?) recognizes immediately.

Seeing the incident from those 3 angles, I found it interesting how
well the Jag took it… I expected it to be more violent inside,
although Pizzonia does have his hat fall off

All the best,
Tom
