[Saloon-lovers] 4.2 conversion and manual gearbox options - Mk 2

Hi all,

I’ve just managed to buy a 3.8 auto Mk 2, missing a cylinder head, and with some nasty looking bores. Its already been bored 40 thou…

Happily, it has no rust, good paint, has a VERY good interior, being of correct spec bar the headlining… oh and the wood is a bit average…

While not exactly correct, I happened apon (by chance) a rebuilt 4.2 XJ motor… which I think I might use… I have 420 carbs, inlet manifold and air cleaner set up… so I think it may go in.

I have a Moss overdrive gearbox and necessary goodies to fit it.

I also have a Series 3 XJ6 5 speed manual box… which I quite adore… its a beautiful thing to use… has anyone fitted one to a Mk 2?

I know the gear lever position is wrong…

If anyone has some ideas about specs that work for them… please feel free to comment…

Here’s a guy who put a 4.2 into a MK1.

Looks like he’s covered a lot of the stuff you’ll be up against.

The only issue really may be the carbs.

If you come out too far, or with too big an air cleaner cover, your
brake and clutch masters are in the way on a RHD MK2.
I know, I have a RHD MK2.

If you can get the shift lever further back with your 5-speed,
you’ll be one up on the rest of us.

First gear is the PITS on a RHD Moss box if you try to have the
seat back and are encumbered by a shoulder belt.–
